The origins of Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract began in Japan following the Second World War, when German professor Dr. Eugene Schnell was tasked with the responsibility of restoring the energy levels and overall health of the Japanese population. 

He introduced the popular Japanese practice of aging and fermentation to garlic and found it increased garlic’s potency beyond its natural levels.

In 1954, Dr. Schnell met Mr. Manji Wakunaga, a banker. Together, they shared a passion for research and development of natural and beneficial products. A year later, the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Company of Japan was established. 

Shortly after, Dr. Schnell developed an aging extraction process for garlic, which resulted in a unique Aged Garlic Extract™.

After establishing and growing the market in Japan, Mr. Wakunaga established Wakunaga of America in 1972. He began distributing Aged Garlic Extract under the Kyolic® brand to the United States and other parts of the world. In 1980, Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ was launched into the Australian market as the only Garlic extract of its kind.

Today, the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Company has head offices in both Osaka in Japan and California in the USA.

To preserve it’s natural benefits, the garlic used in Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract is grown using strict, organic farming methods which prohibit the use of chemical seed treatments, non-organic fertilisers and pesticides.

Kyolic ® Aged Garlic Extract™ then goes through a unique aging process that converts the compounds found in raw garlic into water soluble, stable sulfur compounds that make dosing easier.

The aging process is essentially the difference between raw garlic and the Aged Garlic Extract™. In the aging process, raw garlic is washed, peeled and chopped before being placed to soak in a diluted ethanol solution to naturally age under controlled conditions for up to 20 months. This unique aging process avoids the use of heat that would be detrimental to the development and maintenance of Kyolic ® Aged Garlic Extract’s™ active compounds.

The Aging process:

  • Eliminates the harsh sulfur-containing compounds that can cause gut irritation and heartburn for many people
  • Ensures Aged Garlic Extract™ is odourless 
  • Transforms the garlic into a potent antioxidant
  • Creates a new compound, S-allyl-Cysteine, the stable active ingredient that: - is responsible for Aged Garlic Extract’s™ blood pressure benefits.

A study conducted out of an LA hospital suggests that Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ may help control and even reverse heart disease.

Kyolic® Research

Since the initial development of Kyolic®, more than 700 published studies into its benefits have been conducted by scientists, physicians and nutritionists at more than 50 universities, hospitals and institutes worldwide, including Australia, the United States and Japan.

The most recent of these clinical studies occurred in 2012 at the University of Adelaide, in South Australia. The results of this study were featured on Today Tonight and Channel 9 News as well as appearing in major newspapers including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times. This unprecedented publicity reached over 7 million people nationally.

More recently, new Australian research, published in January 2016, has shown that Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ reduces blood pressure in Australian adults with hypertension. Another recent study conducted at LA BioMed in the United States also published in January 2016 found that supplementing with Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ may halt and potentially reverse the accumulation of low-attenuation plaque in arteries.

This latest research adds to the growing body of evidence verifying Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract’s significant cardiovascular benefits.

New Australian research shows Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract reduces blood pressure 

The 12-week study, published in January 2016 in the Journal of Integrated Blood Pressure Control was led by A/Prof Dr Karin Ried, Research Director at the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Melbourne who has been researching the health benefits of garlic since 2006.

The study found that Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract significantly reduces blood pressure in Australian adults with hypertension, offering hope to those who don’t respond well to prescription medications or would prefer a natural therapy.

Study affirms reduction of fatty plaque build-up in arteries in sufferers of Metabolic Syndrome 

Another study conducted at LA BioMed and led by Matthew J. Budoff, MD, published in the journal of Nutrition in January 2016 found that supplementing with Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract may halt and potentially reverse, the accumulation of low-attenuation plaque in arteries

The amount of low attenuation, or soft plaque in the arteries, contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and predicts a future acute coronary event like a heart attack or stroke.

Aged Garlic Extract™ reduces blood pressure in people with hypertension

A recent clinical study conducted in Australia by Dr. Karin Ried at the University of Adelaide has been great news for the 24% of Australian adults, or 3 million Australians, who have high blood pressure classified as ‘uncontrolled’. Dr Ried’s 2012 research showed that taking two capsules of Aged Garlic Extract™ daily can lower blood pressure in those with uncontrolled hypertension to the same degree as commonly prescribed pharmaceutical drugs.

New Australian research finds garlic supplements reduce high cholesterol and greatly decrease risk of heart disease

More recent research by Dr. Ried in May 2013, has suggested that Aged Garlic Extract™ may be effective in lowering cholesterol – good news for the 6.4 million Australians¹ with high cholesterol.

Dr Ried’s 2013 research has found garlic supplements can reduce cholesterol in those with elevated levels by 8 per cent.  This 8 per cent reduction is significant as it is associated with a 38 per cent decrease in the risk of coronary events for those at 50 years of age.Show more >

Beneficial effects of Aged Garlic Extract and coenzyme Q10 on vascular elasticity and endothelial function: The FAITH randomized clinical trial

In 2012, Researchers from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) Medical Centre identified fire fighters as being 2-4 times more vulnerable for heart attack or other cardiac events due to their high stress levels. 

A group of “at risk” fire fighters were selected for a 12 month trial of a combination of Aged Garlic Extract™ (AGE) and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to determine its benefits for heart health.Show more >

The trial concluded that AGE and CoQ10 are associated with a beneficial effect on inflammatory and oxidative markers and reduced hardening and narrowing of the coronary arteries that carry blood to the heart muscle. Fire fighters also reported feeling less stressed.
