Q1 How can a multivitamin supplement support general health?
A1 Your body requires a wide range of nutrients to maintain wellbeing and
support normal growth, immunity, metabolism and energy production.
Some of these nutrients – for example, certain amino acids or fatty
acids – your body can synthesise on its own. Others, however, need to
come from the food you eat.
In an ideal world, you would obtain all the nutrients you need from a
perfect diet. However, not everyone eats a perfect diet – and growing,
processing, cooking and storing techniques all affect the end nutrient
levels in your food. This means that while good nutrition should always
start with a balanced diet, some people may also benefi t from topping
up with a high quality multivitamin supplement.
Q2 How do B-vitamins support healthy energy levels?
A2 B-group vitamins help your body with the process of producing energy
both directly and indirectly. For example, Biotin directly assists with
producing cellular energy in the mitochondria (cell energy centres).
Less directly, by helping your body to break down the macronutrients in
food, Vitamins B1, B2 and B6 help enable you to extract the energy from
food.
Additionally, your body relies on red blood cells to carry oxygen – which
is burned along with glucose for energy – to the cells that need it. So
by helping to form healthy red blood cells, Vitamins B2 and B12 also
indirectly support your energy levels.
Q3 Which nutrients in this formula specifi cally support women’s health?
A3 • Ribofl avin (Vitamin B2), which your body uses to support its natural
tissue repair processes. This vitamin also helps support healthy skin,
as well as strong hair and nails.
• Iron, which your body uses to make haemoglobin – the protein in red
blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the cells that need
it. Because menstruating women lose Iron each month, they tend to
need a higher dietary Iron intake than men do.
• Vitamin D, which supports bone health by assisting with Calcium
absorption. Eating a diet that is defi cient in Calcium before you
reach your peak bone mass (usually in your early 30s) may lead to
osteoporosis in later life. Good levels of Vitamin D can help your body
to absorb and use the Calcium in your diet.
