Why a multi-vitamin?

It is ideal to obtain the nutrients we need through our food. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains offers a mix of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients which should meet the body’s needs. But the Australian Health Survey of 2017-2018 showed that only 5% of Australian adults consumed the recommended 1-2 serves of fruit and 5-6 serves of vegetables per day.1

Looking at specific nutrients, the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that:
– Over 50% of Australians don’t get enough calcium through their diet
– Almost 40% doesn’t get enough magnesium through their diet
– Up to 30% don’t reach the recommend daily intake of Vitamin A trough their diet.
– Up to 48% of women and 18% of men don’t get enough Vitamin B6 through their diet
– Approximately 25% of Australian women have an inadequate iron intake
– Almost 10% of Australian women don’t meet their folate requirements through the diet
– More than 1 in 3 men (37%) don’t get enough zinc through their diet, and this number increases with age to 66% for those over 71 years of age.
– 1 in 6 women (16%) have inadequate Vitamin B1 intake
– 1 in 12 women (8%) don’t get enough iodine through their diet2,3

A multivitamin can help supplement the diet, and help prevent health issues that may arise from
deficiencies.

Nicotinamide and Vitamin B5 to support energy production
Nicotinamide is the biologically active form of Vitamin B3 and is readily utilized by the body. It helps
form NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD is primarily involved in catabolic reactions that
transfer the potential energy in carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to adenosine triphosphate (ATP).4
Calcium panthothenate (Vitamin B5) is an essential vitamin and the precursor of Coenzyme A.
Coenzyme A plays an important role in energy production, especially the conversion of sugars and
fats into energy.5-7

Vitamin B12 to support nervous system health
Co-methylcobalamin is a biologically active form of Vitamin B12, with research suggesting that it is
better absorbed and retained in the body’s tissues than the synthetic cyanocobalamin.8
Vitamin B12 deficiency is common, with 26% of Australian women having subclinical low-vitamin B12
levels.15 There are various causes for this. A strict vegetarian diet may promote a Vitamin B12 deficiency
because Vitamin B12 is only found in animal-based foods. Low stomach acid levels hinder the absorption
of Vitamin B12 as well. This means that those taking antacids are at risk of developing Vitamin B12
deficiency.9

Studies have found that Vitamin B12 has neuroprotective properties.10,11 It plays an important role
in the production of myelin, the protective sheath around the nerves. Without Vitamin B12, myelin is
produced differently, and the nervous system isn’t able to function properly. As a result, conditions
such as peripheral neuropathy may occur. Even a mild Vitamin B12 deficiency may affect the nervous
system and the proper functioning of the brain.12,13

Biologically active folate to assist healthy red blood cell production
L-5-MTHF is the biologically active form of folate. Folate naturally occurs in foods. Folic acid is
the synthetic form of folate and has no biological function until it is metabolized into 5-MTHF in the
liver and kidneys. Research shows that not everybody metabolizes folic acid efficiently, e.g. those
with a MTHFR polymorphism have a reduced capacity to metabolize it. On the other hand, L-5-MTHF is
bioavailable, well-absorbed and is not affected by metabolic defects. 5-MTHF is also better absorbed and
interacts with fewer medications than folic acid.14
