Saccharomyces cerevisiae is not a probiotic, but a type of yeast sourced from the skin of plants such as lychee and mangosteen, and acts as a probiotic in the digestive tract. It is the only yeast that is formally regarded as a probiotic, but unlike probiotics, S. cerevisiae can survive the acidic environment of our stomach.1

Research shows that S. cerevisiae is transient and undetectable within 2-5 days after cessation of the therapy, therefore there is no concern about yeast overgrowth.2,3

Helps relieve diarrhoea in adults and children
S. cerevisiae is best known for its ability to help prevent and relieve traveller’s diarrhoea. Studies on over 1,000 travellers found that if they took S. cerevisiae (250-1000mg per day) from 5 days before travel until they arrived back home, this significantly reduced their risk on developing traveller’s diarrhoea.7,8

It is believed that this is due to S. cerevisiae’s ability to prevent the adherence and proliferation of pathogens in the digestive tract.9

It is also well-established that taking S. cerevisiae (200-1000mg per day) alongside antibiotics can reduce the risk of developing Antibiotic Associated Diarrhoea (AAD).10,11 S. cerevisiae is not affected by antibiotics and can be safely used alongside them.12

Supports gastrointestinal health
It is believed that S. cerevisiae helps to strengthen the tight junctions in the digestive tract and that it has the ability to adhere to harmful bacteria and gently remove them from the body.4,5

This makes it beneficial in the treatment of several digestive disorders.6 Studies in over 1,000 patients with IBS-D found that treatment with S. cerevisiae improved symptoms such as abdominal bloating, pain and diarrhoea, whether alone or in conjunction with mesalamine therapy.13-15

Clinic trials have shown that S. cerevisiae may reduce the frequency of bowel movements in patients with Crohn’s Disease, possibly because it can help reduce inflammation in the intestinal tract and help improve intestinal permeability.16-18

Patients with Ulcerative Colitis could benefit from using S. cerevisiae for 3 months (in combination with mesalamine), as studies have shown this resulted in fewer clinical relapses.19,20

Research reveals that patients who took antibiotics or standard triple therapy to treat a
H. pylori infection had a lower incidence of Antibiotic Associated Diarrhoea (AAD) when taking
S. cerevisiae at the same time.21-24 Some research suggests that S. cerevisiae could improve eradication rates of H. pylori from the human gastrointestinal system, though it was not able to eradicate infection when used on its own.25,26
