Weight Management

Healthy weight management is the ability to keep your weight in check and adhere to a healthy lifestyle. One of the best ways to tell if you are a healthy weight for your body type, with or without the scales, is to answer a few simple questions about how you feel in your everyday life.

If you are a healthy weight, you should feel physically balanced, well, and full of energy. Your weight should not burden your body by placing extra pressure on your joints or muscles. Your digestion should work efficiently, meaning you are not burdened with heartburn or indigestion from eating too many processed, fatty foods. Taking a healthy approach to weight management should also protect you from becoming too thin for your height and frame, and should not involve depriving yourself of foods through restrictive diets.

When you are managing your weight in a healthy way, you don’t starve yourself, over-exercise, or remove whole food groups from your diet.  Doing so deprives the body of nutrient dense carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Excluding any of these groups from your diet for an extended period of time can result in a deficiency of key vitamins and minerals.

The biggest culprits implicated in derailing your best efforts to follow a healthy diet and weight are:

  • A dependence on sugar (fizzy drinks, chocolate, sweets, alcohol)
  • The consumption of large meal sizes (always going back for seconds, particular when a meal is high refined carbohydrates such as white rice or pasta)
  • Consumption of processed foods (high in saturated fats, high in refined, high GI carbohydrates)
  • A reliance on fast foods/convenience foods
  • Irregular meal times
  • Too little exercise

The role of nutritional supplements in weight management

When it comes to overcoming some of these these culprits, the cravings that result from depriving the body of highly sugar and fat dense foods, can cause changes in mood, sleep patterns and our ability to concentrate. In order to help the body through this time, as well as support the breaking of bad food habits, nutritional supplements can be beneficial.
